SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Bowdoin outshot Skidmore College 42-31, but failed to notch the clincher as the Polar Bears skated to a 2-2 draw in men’s ice hockey action Friday evening.

After a scoreless first period, the Polar Bears (3-0-1) built a two-goal lead in the second. James Gadon notched his first goal of the season just 3:06 into the stanza. First-year Mike Corbelle continued his hot play, scoring his third tally of the season late in the frame.

But Skidmore rallied, scoring early in the third period. Matt Czerkowicz found the back of the net just two minutes into the period. And, after a slashing call against Bowdoin, the Thoroughbreds (4-0-1) cashed in on the powerplay.

Castleton 3, Colby 1

CASTLETON, Vt. – Ryan Bartlett scored a goal and an assist as Castleton State garnered a 3-1 victory over Colby in men’s hockey action Friday.

The Badgers scored just 1:27 into the game and never trailed. Bartlett converted a relay from Steve Culbertson for the first tally, while Ross Carmichael added the eventual game-winning goal on the power play at 6:15 of the opening period.

The White Mules (3-1) got its goal on the power play as well off the stick of Joe Rothwell. Michael Belliveau and T.J. Kelley had assists on the goal at 11:46 of the second period.

Women’s basketball

UMA 62, Unity 48

AUGUSTA – Freshman guard Natalie Nimon scored 16 points to lift the University of Maine at Augusta to a 62-48 victory over Unity in women’s basketball action Friday.

The Moose (3-7) jumped out to a quick start and built an overwhelming lead early to take a 41-21 margin into the break. Freshman center Aleigh Mills contributed 14 points on five field goals and four free throws.

The Rams (0-7) came out charging in the second half, cutting the 20-point deficit in half. But the Moose made a stand and prevented Unity from getting any closer.

UNE 59, Thomas 56

BIDDEFORD – Sara Pelkey registered a team-high 12 points and seven rebounds in a balanced attack as the University of New England took a 59-56 win from Thomas College in women’s basketball action Friday.

After junior Kate Bailey converted a 3-point field goal with just under five minutes remaining to put the Nor’easters (2-2) up by 15, Thomas rallied behind the long distance shooting of senior Kim Drosdik of Farmington.

Drosdik nailed three treys over the next four minutes, her third capping a 15-2 run to draw the Terriers (0-4) to within two (58-56) with 54 seconds on the clock. But a 3-point attempt with seven seconds remaining came up empty.

Sophomore Amy Miles recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 boards in the losing effort.

St. Joe’s 66, UMPI 49

STANDISH – Carolyn Freeman led the way for St. Joseph’s with her first intercollegiate double-double (16 points, 10 rebounds) as the Monks defeated the University of Maine at Presque Isle 66-49 in Game 1 of the Merry Monk Classic.

Junior captain Megan Farrell and sophomore Megan Willette turned in strong performances for the Monks (3-2) with 11 points apiece.

The Owls (1-2) closed a 20-point deficit to within 12 points, 50-38 at the 11-minute mark. But baskets by Freeman and Willette kept the Monks in charge.

Norwich 68, Bates 56

NORWICH, Vt. – Kayleigh Shappy scored 20 points and Caitlyn Bailey added a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds as Norwich University topped Bates College 68-56 in women’s basketball action Friday.

The Cadets (5-0) led by as many as eight points in the first half before the Bobcats (3-2) cut it to 35-32 at the break. Norwich extended the lead in the second half before allowing the Bobcats to close in for one last tease. The Cadets closed the game on a 19-8 run.

Junior Matia Kostakis led five Bobcats in double figures with 12 points and 12 rebounds. First-year Lauren Yanofsky and sophomore Val Beckwith added 11 apiece, while junior Sarah Barton and first-year Teal Carroll both scored 10 points, with Barton tallying six assists.

Men’s basketball

UMA 84, Unity 66

AUGUSTA – Sophomore guard Deon Cheers drained an impressive 29 points to power the University of Maine at Augusta to an 84-66 triumph over Unity in men’s basketball action Friday.

The Moose (3-3) played even in the first half with sophomore guard Andrew Rogers hitting a bucket at the buzzer for a 39-38 lead at intermission. The Augusta squad opened the second half with a 12-2 run and cruised the rest of the way, while freshman forward Tyler Norris added 17 points.

Junior forward Brandon Coones tossed seven field goals for the Rams (1-5), including three from beyond the arc.
