LIVERMORE FALLS – Geneva Hodgkins is heartbroken.

Someone stole one of the 6-foot decorated Christmas trees that her husband, Bill, had put into the ground at Union Park for her. Someone also moved the Civil War cannon that Selectman Russell Flagg had moved to the park for her after Hodgkins’ nephew, Tim DeMillo and the crew at Howie’s Welding in Jay had restored it.

Police are investigating the incident and keeping a sharp watch on the park, Hodgkins said.

The Livermore Falls senior citizen adopted the park at the intersection of Church, Main and Union streets in downtown Livermore Falls a few years ago and has worked ever since to keep the park looking like a centerpiece.

Hodgkins said she and her husband had put in the trees and electrician Louis Chabot had concealed the wires for the lights so no one would trip on them. Her friend Wendy Mitchell helped with the decorating.

On Monday, Hodgkins noticed that the tree near the Pentecostal Church had been taken out of the ground, lights and all.

“I’m not as mad as I am heartbroken,” Hodgkins said. “Me and these people are working hard to make the town look good.” Then someone else comes along and undoes the work that was done, she said.

People and businesses in the area have donated money or items for the park and others have volunteered their time, Hodgkins said. “I paid for the lights by myself,” she added.

She bought another tree to replace the one that was stolen and Wal-Mart donated a 6-foot tree to go in as a decoration as well, she said.

Hodgkins also saw Monday that someone had shifted the cannon from the place it had rested.

Her nephew had had the wheels on the cannon welded so that they wouldn’t roll so nobody could make off with it, she said.

People are investing time and money to make the town look better, she said.

“You’re damned if you do and you’re damned if you don’t,” Hodgkins said.
