HARTFORD – This year’s high water table is wreaking some havoc in the Berry Road area, Road Committee Chairman Bob Calawa told Selectmen Thursday night.

Water running down South Paw, a private road, is contributing to erosion on Berry Road, which is a town road, Calawa said.

Darcy Ames, who lives on Berry Road, said water is up to the slab of her trailer and she is getting mold and mildew. Also, she said, the water is at her well and her driveway has dropped 3 inches this year.

Calawa said he thought the problem could be solved by putting in larger culverts at the top of South Paw and ditching along the roads to keep water off private property.

Code Enforcement Officer Jack Plumley said the entire area is like a wetland. There are so many springs on the hill, he said, water keeps running into the road, as well. Also, he said, all towns are having water problems this year.

Board Chairman Dave Bowen told Ames that the town is working to solve the problem and will continue to do so until a solution is found.

Road Commissioner Cathy Lowe reported that the guardrails were up at the new bridge on Town Farm Road. Calawa said there is a berm behind the rails that has to be raked down, as it is higher than the level of the road and the side of the road will be washed out unless it is addressed.

Plumley said he had issued one building permit to Randy Gammon to move a house from Canton to Davenport Road. Gammon purchased the house during a recent auction in Canton.

One concealed-weapons permit was approved.

Sigrid Houlette was appointed assistant code enforcement officer for training purposes. This is a volunteer position.

The next meeting of the board will be on Tuesday, Dec. 19, instead of Thursday, Dec. 21.
