NEWINGTON, N.H. (AP) – The attorney general’s office is suing to get an abandoned house barge out of the Piscataqua River.

Authorities say the dilapidated three-bedroom barge has been abandoned in Newington since May 2002, when it was towed there from Badger’s Island, Maine, became stuck and sank.

The attorney general’s office says the state has provided owners Eric Chinburg and Skye Maher opportunities to remove the barge, but after seven months they haven’t done so.

The lawsuit filed in Rockingham County Superior Court alleges that the barge is a public nuisance, trespasses on state property and violates wetlands protection laws.

The suit seeks an order against Chinburg, Mayer and Badger’s Island LLC requiring the removal of the barge and fines as high as $10,000 per day.
