BANGOR (AP) – A former Bangor High School student has died of injuries he suffered when a bomb exploded near his military vehicle in Iraq, the Department of Defense said.

Army Staff Sgt. Kristofer R. Ciraso, 26, died of injuries suffered Thursday in Baghdad.

Ciraso was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, Texas.

Ciraso held leadership positions in the junior ROTC program at Bangor High School and was a good student, said Lt. Col. Jack Kurtzman, director of the program.

“He seemed to take a lot of pride in, at least for that age, wearing a uniform,” Kurtzman said.

Gov. John Baldacci and members of Maine’s congressional delegation issued statements of condolence, saying Ciraso served his country honorably and will be missed.

Ciraso, whose division left Fort Hood in late October for its latest deployment, was the second service member with Maine ties to die last week in Iraq.

Marine Cpl. Dustin Libby, 22, of Castle Hill, was killed Wednesday during combat in Anbar Province.
