BETHEL – Following an executive session Monday night, SAD 44 directors voted to extend Superintendent David Murphy’s five-year contract to 2012.

Murphy said late Wednesday afternoon that wages weren’t discussed during the routine performance review. That will be done at a future negotiations meeting.

The extended contract becomes effective on June 30, 2007, the end of this school year.

In other business, Murphy updated directors on school security, an issue he’s been working on for more than a year.

Besides scheduling a future meeting with Bethel police Chief Alan Carr and Oxford County Emergency Management Agency Director Scott Parker, Murphy said directors at the Jan. 8 meeting would be shown a DVD program example that gives police a layout of school facilities.

“Final Options Company developed a DVD for us for the Police Department, so that, in the event of an emergency, they could run the DVD in their cruiser while they were responding, and it would help them navigate the building,” Murphy said.

At the Nov. 13 board meeting, Murphy spoke briefly about the Sun Journal’s article on school security.

The newspaper sent reporters to several schools in an attempt to see how long they could be in a building before being confronted by staff.

Murphy said a reporter was stopped immediately at Crescent Park Elementary School, but wandered for five minutes inside the Telstar middle and high school building.

At each school checked, Murphy said the reporter was intercepted by staff and directed to check in at the office. Additionally, a secretary’s office has been moved closer to the front entrance of Telstar.
