Parking extended

RUMFORD – Parking on the Island in downtown Rumford has been extended to three hours instead of the normal two hours for holiday shopping.

Previous announcements listed it as free parking all day but residents are reminded that parking tickets will be issued for those cars parked over three hours.

Class luncheon

MEXICO – The Class of 1946 of Stephens High School will meet for a luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 20, at the Chicken Coop.

Support meeting

RUMFORD – The Alzheimer Support Group will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 20, at 85 Lincoln Ave. For more information, call Donna Landry at 364-4561.

Class meeting

MEXICO – The women of the Class of 1948 of Stephens High School will meet at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 21, at Dick’s Restaurant. Call Bev at 364-4085 if attending.

Society party

MEXICO – The Mexico Historical Society will hold a brief meeting followed by a Christmas party at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 19, at the Calvin Lyons meeting room in the town hall.

Members are reminded that there will not be the usual potluck supper, but those attending are asked to bring finger foods. Tim and Nicholas Blodgett will present a program on Christmas music.

Elections will be held in January. Nominations and input is needed to help the society continue. Membership dues are payable for 2007. All are welcome to join the group for food, fellowship and music.

The museum at 3 Oxford St. will be closed January, February and March. Starting in April, it will reopen from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursdays.

Blood drive

CANTON – An American Red Cross blood drive will be held from noon to 6 p.m. today, at the Canton Town Hall, 36 School St.

Christmas event

RUMFORD – The Rumford United Methodist Church, Linnell Street, will hold a special Christmas celebration on Sunday, Dec. 17. At the 10:30 a.m. worship service, the children/youth will present a program directed by Dee Holman.

The Youth Group, led by Michael Dunn, meets Sundays at 9:30 a.m. for studies and activities.

The children’s Sunday school usually meets at 10:30 a.m., but Sunday they will present the worship service.

A birthday party for Jesus with a potluck luncheon will follow. A visit from Santa Claus is expected.

In the afternoon, Pastor Kelly Harvell will entertain at an open house at the parsonage, 50 Franklin St. All are welcome. The parsonage will be open from 2 to 4 p.m.

VFW supper

RUMFORD – The VFW Auxiliary will sponsor a public supper from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 21, at the post. The menu will include smothered beef, potato, peas, biscuits and desserts for $6 adults, $2.50 ages under 12. There will also be a 50/50 drawing.

Story hour

MEXICO – Preschool story and craft hour on Tuesday, Dec. 19, will include stories about Christmas Eve and the following will be read: “Snowmen at Christmas” by Caralyn Buehner, “The Night Before Christmas” by Clement C. Moore, “Room for a Little One” by Martin Waddell and “Max’s Christmas Stocking” by Rosemary Wells. Santa masks will be made during the craft time. All children, ages 2-5, are welcome.

Story hour will not be held on Tuesday, Dec. 26. The library, along with all other municipal buildings, will be closed that day in observance of the Christmas holidays. The hour will return on Tuesday, Jan. 2.

Christmas carols

RUMFORD – Pennacook Art Center will hold its third annual live Christmas carol sing-along at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 22, at the gallery at 82 Congress St.

Music will be provided by Fishers of Men and other local musicians. All are welcome to attend.
