PARIS – Several cases were presented for arraignments and pleas at Oxford County Superior Court on Tuesday.

Robert Raftice, 20, of Sabattus was sent back to jail after Justice Ellen Gorman kept his bail at $5,000 cash or $50,000 in property. He pleaded not guilty to charges that he sexually assaulted two children under 7 years old.

Also, a 30-year-old woman from Harrison accused of stealing from a Norway store pleaded not guilty to the misdemeanor charge of theft by unauthorized taking.

Melinda R. Edwards of Harrison has been charged with one count of theft by “exercising unauthorized control over cash and checks” worth more than $1,000 from George and Paula Gordon, owners of Maine Made & More on Main Street in Norway.

The incidents are alleged to have happened on March 14 and April 23, 2006.

A Sun Journal newspaper article dated April 13 identifies Edwards as the store’s manager. Gorman released Edwards on her own recognizance. A telephone message left at her Edes Falls Road residence was not returned Tuesday.

According to her booking sheet at the Oxford County Jail, Edwards also worked as a substitute teacher for SAD 17. Mark Eastman said Tuesday, “She did sub for us for some time but is not currently on our approved list,” adding he could not speak specifically about personnel matters.

Timothy Scott Caldwell, 21, of Cornish was sentenced for burglary and theft at the residence of Shawn Baldwin last March. Caldwell was charged with stealing tools and a generator from Baldwin, as well as diesel fuel belonging to Richard Parmenter. The total value of the goods police estimated at more than $10,000.

Gorman sentenced Caldwell to 18 months for the counts of burglary and theft, and a third count of criminal mischief was thrown out. All 18 months were suspended, and Caldwell will be on probation for two years. He also was ordered to pay restitution to both Baldwin and Parmenter and have no contact with either man.

James L. Cummings, 18, of Norway was sentenced to 10 months in jail for assault, with all but seven days suspended, and put on one year probation. He was also fined $300.

Last August, Cummings was arrested for assaulting John Hale, and when Hale ran into his apartment and locked the door, Cummings used a knife to pry it open. According to a police report, Cummings then punched Hale in the chest and head. The fight allegedly was started by a dispute over a girlfriend.

Cummings pleaded “nolo contendre,” which means he does not admit to the charge, but does not dispute it either.
