BANGOR (AP) – A 24-year-old Eddington woman was ordered to spend six months behind bars for criminal operating under the influence but had a manslaughter charge dropped as part of a plea agreement.

Angela Reynolds was sentenced in Penobscot County Superior Court on Tuesday to 3 years in prison with three years suspended for a July 4, 2005, accident that killed Carl Boyington, 83, of Bradley.

Boyington and a friend had stopped on the side of Route 178 in Eddington when he was hit by Reynolds’ car after she lost sight of the road when she attempted to retrieve something she had dropped in her car.

When Reynolds was treated at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor for minor head injuries, she had methadone, marijuana, Valium, muscle relaxants and other drugs in her system, Deputy District Attorney Michael Roberts said.

On the morning of the crash, Reynolds had gone to a methadone clinic at Acadia Hospital in Bangor and taken her prescribed dosage. Reynolds had prescriptions for all the drugs, which were within prescribed levels, and she admitted smoking marijuana the night before, Roberts said.

Roberts said it couldn’t be proven where Boyington was standing when he was struck, so his office agreed to drop the manslaughter charge if Reynolds pleaded guilty to the lesser charge.
