PERU – Selectmen, with input from Road Commissioner David Gammon, developed a list of roads needing immediate attention Monday night.

Some projects were too large for Gammon to have immediate figures to give the board, but the list covered roads needing rebuilding and resurfacing. The list was not prioritized in order of importance, and figures given were estimates. In need of resurfacing were Gammon Road at $23,000, Ridge Road at $38,000, Valley Road at $20,000, Peru Center Road at $24,000, and Pleasant Street after rebuilding at $30,000.

Those roads needing rebuilding were Pleasant Street at $125,000, and Main Street manholes at $50,000. Estimates were not given for the remaining roads of Dickvale, Gammon, Mineral Springs, Ridge, Bird Farm to McGuire, McGuire to Turner, Packard, Holman and East Shore.

Selectmen think that borrowing money to do all road projects would not impact the tax rate because payments could be arranged close to what the road budget is presently.

Gammon said, “If we continue the way we are going, it will take 88 years to just get around to all the roads in town.”

Gammon gave his immediate budget of $32,000 for Summer roads in 2007 to include ditching, cutting trees and widening of La Croix Road, which he estimates at $8,000. He said they need to cut brush townwide and do ditching on Holman Road.

There will be a referendum Jan. 9 to elect a selectman to replace Dennis Thibodeau. James Pulsifer and Burchard (Bill) Scott have taken out papers for the position.

The other issue on the referendum will be issuing bonds not to exceed $4.9 million to construct, equip an addition and do renovations to the Region 9 School of Applied Technology building on River Road in Mexico.

The board recommended that Code Enforcement Officer Jack Plumley determine a time frame concerning compliance by Paul Bickford to code violations at his property on Worthley Pond. The three areas of compliance are that the dwelling not be a year-round residence, the deck be removed and trees planted. Chairman Bill Hine said the Plumley should determine the time frame to be fair to all concerned.

Because of the holidays, the next meeting for selectmen will be Jan. 8.
