RUMFORD – Wayne Gallant is the first person from Rumford to be elected sheriff of Oxford County.
With his November election, and the re-election of Mary Ann Prue as county treasurer, and Jane Rich as register of deeds, both from the Rumford area, the swearing in for all three will take place in Rumford.
The ceremony begins at 2 p.m. Monday at Hotel Harris, with a gathering time of 1:30 p.m. A reception immediately follows.
Conducting the ceremony will be Laura Nokes, a Rumford native and former Rumford District Court clerk who now serves at Paris District Court.
Nokes is a dedimus justice. The license entitles the holder to swear-in elected or other civil officials, and the appointment is made by the governor for life.
The event, opened to the public, is sponsored by the Oxford County Democratic Committee. Hotel Harris was chosen as the site for taking the oaths of office because of its long history and its 100th anniversary this year.
“We wanted to get some publicity for Rumford,” Gallant said. “Usually the swearing in is a quiet function.”
Gallant said he will appoint Cpl. Dane Tripp of Poland as his chief deputy at the event. Tripp has 16 years experience with the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office.
County Democratic Chairwoman Cathy Newell said other Democrats holding office will also attend the ceremony, including state Sen. Bruce Bryant of Dixfield and Rep. John Patrick of Rumford.
