RUMFORD – Mountain Valley executed its game plan to perfection Saturday night to remain unbeaten.

Junior Owen Jones sparked a 16-3 run in the second quarter and finished with a game-high 24 points as the Falcons cruised to a 81-21 triumph over Hall-Dale at Puiia Gymnasium.

It was the Falcons’ 80th consecutive victory in an MVC regular-season game.

Starting in the second quarter, Mountain Valley made 20 consecutive field goals until reserve Dean McCrillis missed midway through the fourth quarter. The defense was equally effective by forcing 35 turnovers.

“Yes, we like to get in the passing lanes,” Jones said. “Our defense creates turnovers and fuels our offense. We are having fun together out on the court.”

The Falcons took off by scoring 16 straight points to take a 37-7 lead with 2:32 to go before halftime. Jones (six steals) and Justin Stairs (12 points, eight assists, seven steals) combined on three baskets, and Bryan Cantwell put in an offensive rebound. Hall-Dale was held scoreless until Mike Shephard scored with 1:12 left in the first half.

“We have a system,” Mountain Valley coach Dave Gerrish said. “And we try to practice it daily. Usually our defense picks us up. That creates a lot of our offense.”

It was the end of a busy week for Mountain Valley (6-0). The Falcons beat Lisbon on Friday night and also defeated Scarborough, Falmouth and Greely in a Christmas tournament. They lost to Class A Deering by one point in overtime.

“It was busy, but we are sad it’s over,” Jones said. “We played a lot of ball, and it was quite productive.”

Andy Shorey (14 points) opened the third quarter with two-power baskets, and center Matt Lyons cleaned up in the paint. D.J. Gerrish (nine points) scored a runner. The Falcons led 67-11 before Tyler Cummings scored for the Bulldogs.

The Falcons were red-hot, shooting 65 percent from the floor. The Bulldogs shot 29 percent from the floor.

Mountain Valley had reserves Andrew McCann, Keith Brennick, Travis Ruff and Brendan Kreckel contribute in the second half.
