LEWISTON – Contenders for the mayor’s chair will find out today who their competition will be.
Candidates have until 4:30 p.m. to file nominating petitions with the City Clerk’s office.
So far, four candidates have collected 100 signatures from Lewiston voters and are guaranteed a spot – City Councilor Normand Rousseau, former police Chief Larry Gilbert, school committee member Leah Poulin and perennial candidate Charles Soule.
Former City Councilor Marc Mason began passing a petition to qualify on Dec. 11 but said he doesn’t know if he’ll get enough signatures by today’s filing deadline.
“I guess I’ll have to make a decision real quick,” he said. “The deadline kind of snuck up on me.”
To qualify for the mayor’s race, candidates need to be at least 20 years old and registered to vote in Lewiston since at least Aug. 5.
They need to collect at least 100 signatures from qualified Lewiston voters by Jan. 5 to get their names on the ballot.
The winner will sit in the mayor’s chair until December 2007, the remainder of Lionel Guay’s term.
Guay resigned the post in November.
Everyone, winners or losers in the Feb. 27 ballot, can run for a full two-year term in November.
