FARMINGTON – Carl John Eastwood, 94, of Rangeley, died Friday, Jan. 5, at Edgewood Nursing Home, after a short illness.
He was born Nov. 15, 1912, in Wirral, New Brunswick, Canada, the son of John Henry Eastwood and Lillian Kirkpatrick Eastwood. Taking an entire railroad car, John and Lillian moved the family from their farm in Canada to Rialto, Calif., in December 1926.
He graduated from San Bernardino High School, Calif., on June 15, 1933.
He left California to help his uncle, Sam Eastwood at the Bald Mountain Camps in Oquossoc. There he met his future wife, Barbara Moulton, who was employed as a waitress at the camps. He proposed to Barbara at a Saturday night dance, showing her the ring, and they were married in Rangeley on Sept. 28, 1940. After moving back and forth to California for five years, they finally settled in Rangeley in August 1948.
He was a skilled carpenter by trade and his handiwork can be seen in many camps throughout the region. In 1965, he left carpentry to help Gertrude O’Brien at the Rangeley Region Sports Shop. The shop shipped fly tying supplies around the United States and abroad. He was a member of the Lions Club, Rotary Club and the Masonic Lodge.
Their home on Main Street was open to all and they welcomed friends in to sit and chat. He filled flower boxes and pots with geraniums and begonias. Passers-by were always stopping to compliment him on the flowers. He enjoyed living in Rangeley, his favorite drives spotting deer and moose, working on puzzles in winter and word puzzles on the porch in summer. We’ll miss his quick wit, stories of a long life lived and family times round the kitchen table.
He is survived by two sons, Carl, and his wife, Joanne, of Milford, Ohio and Steve, and his wife, Ann, of Seattle, Wash.; a daughter, Sue of Fryeburg; a brother, Lorne of Rialto, Calif.; a granddaughter, Megan Eastwood VanPelt of Milford, Ohio; and two great-grandchildren, Katelyn Elizabeth and Tyler Scott of Milford, Ohio.
He was predecreased by his wife, Barbara; two brothers, Bill and Ralph; and a sister, Marguerite.
