NORWAY – Milio J. Poliquin Sr., 81, of Otisfield passed away on Jan. 11 at Stephens Memorial Hospital.
He was born June 27, 1925, in Lewiston, son of Armand and Dorothy L’Heureux Poliquin. He was educated in the Lewiston school system and was inducted into the U.S. Army in 1943. He served in Italy during World War II as part of the 351st Infantry, 88th Division Blue Devils.
Upon his discharge in 1945, he joined the family business, Poliquin’s Jewelers and Opticians in Lewiston. In 1948, he married the love of his life, Rolande Y. Laliberté of Lewiston and raised two sons. He and his wife acquired the business in 1971, and operated it together until their semi-retirement in 1976. Thereafter, they worked from their home on Thompson Lake with Milio as clock master and his wife as assistant and bookkeeper.
Having traveled extensively in the Northeast and enjoying camping on Long Lake for 10 years, the family purchased a camp on Thompson Lake in 1971, and made it their permanent home in 1973. Being on the lake was his life. The fish were always frightened when his boat left the dock. In addition, he enjoyed ice fishing, camping, snowmobiling, boating, working around the house and listening to his wife sing. Most of all, he enjoyed having family gatherings by the lake.
He will be greatly missed by all his family, friends and neighbors.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Rolande of Otisfield; two sons, Bob Poliquin, and his wife, Rhonda, of Denmark and Meo Poliquin, and his partner, Deb Gajewski, of Harrison; granddaughter, Mia Poliquin Pross, and her husband, Jim, of Auburn; granddaughter, Jennifer Poliquin of Norway; grandson, Jeff Poliquin of Oxford; great-grandchildren, Brittany Packard and Evan Poliquin; brother, Guildo Poliquin of Poland Spring; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; sister, Monita Collet; and his beloved German Shepherd, Wolfie.
The family would like to express its appreciation to Milio’s close neighbors for all their support and kindness. They also extend a special thank-you to Dr. James Eshleman, Dr. Robert Story and the entire staff at Stephens Memorial Hospital.
