LEWISTON – Individuals interested in supporting terminally ill patients and their families can still register to participate in hospice volunteer classes that begin this month in Lewiston. Classes will be held Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from Jan. 23 to Feb. 15.

Sponsored by Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice, the classes will provide 27 hours of training to prospective volunteers about the needs of hospice patients and the ways that volunteers can help.

“The classes have been scheduled to meet the increased needs of AHCH hospice patients,” said Nancy Greene, volunteer coordinator. “Volunteers are valued members of the AHCH hospice team, which also includes physicians, nurses, home health aides, social workers and chaplains.”

Hospice volunteers are matched with patients in their community or in nearby towns. They support patients at home, in long-term care facilities and at the AHCH Hospice House in Auburn.
