Maine law currently assumes that any family’s home is “up for sale.” The home’s tax assessment is based on what someone would pay for it. Thus, people with ocean or mountain views – at least – are assessed at what a rich person would pay for it.

But these are our homes. They are a great part of our identity as persons. They should not be considered a commodity, like so many cans of beans.

Soon, a vote on changing Maine’s Constitution to freeze the property tax assessments of Maine residents will occur. It will make our homes more secure. We still have social cohesion, and should value it highly.

The constitutional change will help a lot.

I support the assessment freeze and constitutional change.
