SOUTH PORTLAND, (AP) – An internal review has cleared two South Portland police officers of any wrongdoing in the fatal shooting of a 40-year-old man last fall.
Donald Gray was shot by Officers Theodore Sargent and Jeffrey Cogswell during a confrontation Nov. 29 at a home where he’d been living with his parents.
The internal review, released Monday, found that the officers were justified in firing four shots each at Gray because he was threatening them with a pistol. The officers were responding to a 911 call Gray’s father had made to police.
Maine’s attorney general ruled Jan. 9 that Sargent and Cogswell were legally justified in the shooting.
The incident was the first fatal police shooting in South Portland since 1971.
