Legion service

RUMFORD – The Rumford American Legion and Auxiliary will hold a special ceremony at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 4, at the post home on Congress Street to honor the four chaplains of World War II who lost their lives when the S.S. Dorchester sank off Greenland on Feb. 3, 1943. A lunch will follow the ceremony. All members and guests are welcome to attend.

Youth events

MEXICO – The youth of the Mexico Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, also known as “The Green Church,” are participating in two youth-led mission projects.

Sunday, Feb. 4, the church will observe Super Bowl Sunday by participating in the ecumenical project “Souper Bowl of Caring.” The children will carry empty coffee cans among the worshippers. As loose change is dropped in to the cans, it creates a “noisy offering,” much to the delight of the children. The proceeds of the collection will be divided between the GRAMPA Food Cupboard and the GRAMPS lunch program. GRAMPA Food Cupboard is an ecumenical program which is supported by many area churches and is housed at the church. The GRAMPS program serves a free hot lunch every Wednesday at the town hall.

Throughout 2006, the children also collected money in a birthday bank from parishioners, honoring those with birthdays or anniversaries each month. The sum of $500 from this fund has now been sent to Heifer International. This is the amount required to send a heifer (a young cow) to a poor family in an underdeveloped country.
