MILBRIDGE – Maine State Police say a man died early Thursday morning in a fiery crash on Route 1A in Milbridge in Washington County.
The body was taken to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Augusta for autopsy and identification.
Investigating Trooper Staci Smith said Thursday night that the car left Route 1A, slammed into a tree and caught fire. “There were no witnesses to the actual crash,” she said. A passer-by reported it shortly before 1 a.m.
Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said in a statement that the car was traveling at high speed and went airborne before it crashed.
The car was registered to a man from nearby Steuben, Smith said. Until positive identification is made sometime next week, no name will be released.
