BETHEL – Ellen Cowie, director of the University of Maine at Farmington’s Archaeology Research Center, will present a 45-minute program about Maine archaeology starting at 7 tonight in the McLaughlin Science Center Auditorium at Gould Academy in Bethel.
“Learning About the Past Through Archaeology” is the third of four talk and slide-show programs this winter and spring, all hosted by the Mahoosuc Land Trust through its Local Knowledge series.
Cowie, of New Vineyard, is also an assistant UMF archaeology professor specializing in prehistoric or pre-European and historic archaeology.
Last July, Cowie did a state-required archaeology project for the trust’s proposed bicycle path along the Androscoggin River in Bethel, she said Tuesday night by phone from her home.
She didn’t find any evidence of prehistoric or Native American sites there, but found several in Canton while doing past studies for International Paper’s relicensing of its Otis impoundment.
Cowie said she does archaeological contract work for the state regarding subdivision and site development requirements, and is working on one for Plum Creek at Moosehead Lake in Greenville.
