FARMINGTON – The West End String Quartet, a fresh, young group based out of Boston and Hartford, will perform at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, in Nordica Auditorium at the University of Maine at Farmington.

Featuring Mt. Blue graduate Sarah Washburn on violin, the quartet also includes three other graduates of the Hartt School of Music in Hartford, Conn.: Jessica Meyer, violins; Russell Wilson, viola; and Carlynn Savot, cello.

They will perform works by Debussy, Piazzolla, Stravinsky, Webern, Charles Ives, and Mozart.

Since its inception in 2005, the West End String Quartet has been performing chamber music before audiences across New England. “We just got back from a trip to Pittsburgh, where we competed in the MTNA Chamber Music competition, recorded a piece by Pittsburgh composer Steve Kornicki, and had a really successful concert, including the Debussy and the Piazzolla,” wrote Washburn.

She noted that the Webern piece in the program is an early work, German and romantic. “We are playing the Ives Scherzo at Wesleyan University the week before we come to Maine. It is a really funny, really short piece …”

The Feb. 18 program will also include Mozart’s Divertimento in D, K. 136, a light-hearted work.
