BERLIN, N.H. – Firefighter Bill Maddalena, with the Berlin Fire Department, cooked his way to $5,000 and second place in the fourth national Tabasco Cook and Ladder Competition in New York City.

Maddalena traded in his turnout coat and Scott pack for an apron and spice rack to make his favorite recipe, “Twisted Brownie Sundae.” He went head-to-head with the culinary talent of nine other firefighters from around the country.

The grand prize winner of $10,000 is Rett Blankenship with the Dallas, Texas, Fire Department for his “Southwest Glazed Rack of Lamb with Smoky Grits.” Third place and $2,000 went to James Coppinger with the Framingham, Mass., Fire Department for his “Barn Burning Baked Catfish Wrapped in Bacon.”

All prize money is split evenly between each of the firefighters and their firehouses.
