OQUOSSOC – Forrest Bonney, a fisheries biologist in Strong with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, will be the guest speaker at the Mollyockett Trout Unlimited meeting Thursday, Feb. 15, with the Rangeley Guides and Sportsmen at their Oquossoc clubhouse.

Following a potluck supper at 5:30 p.m. and meeting 60 minutes later, Bonney will summarize stream restoration work in the Rangeley area to date and discuss planned 2007 projects, which includes work on Bemis Stream, if the department receives funding.

Last year, at South Bog Stream, Bonney and volunteers completed three projects, all near South Shore Drive. The work restored brook trout habitat that was degraded by log drives, primarily through the construction of pools.

Bonney said three different treatments were used and will be monitored to determine their effectiveness. Volunteers also installed grade control structures on the Cupsuptic River to slow the movement of sediment, which was filling in trout pools.

They’re also restoring brook trout habitat on the upper Sandy River by constructing pools.
