LIVERMORE – A fire that destroyed a man’s home Thursday night was probably caused by a wood stove on the first floor, Lt. Mark Chretien said Friday.

“Most likely it was a wood stove,” he said. Officially, though, the cause is undetermined, he said, and nobody from the state Office of the Fire Marshal was called to investigate.

“He lost everything,” Fire Chief Don Castonguay said of the home’s owner, John Miller of 124 Maple Lane. “That cold weather, and plus, when they got there the fire was coming out both sides. Usually, it’s been going on quite a while when a fire blows out like that.”

The fire was called in around 8 p.m Thursday by a neighbor, Chretien said. Firefighters from Livermore Falls and Jay helped Livermore fight it. It was a tough night to put out a blaze, Chretien said, because of the cold temperatures.

None of the pumps froze up Thursday, Chretien said, but they were close.

Miller, an insurance adjuster, had insurance on his home and Chretien said he believed he was staying with his parents Thursday night.
