Another soldier with Maine ties has been killed in Iraq.
Staff Sgt. Eric Ross, 26, died during combat operations in Baqubah, Iraq, on Friday, according to the governor’s office.
Ross was born in Maine; his parents live in East Corinth and Levant.
David Farmer, a spokesman for the governor’s office said Saturday night that he believes Ross lived in Texas with his wife and two children.
Ross was assigned to B Company, 1-12 Combined Arms Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, of the 1st Cavalry Division.
Gov. John Baldacci spoke with Ross’ parents Saturday night.
“Staff Sergeant Ross is a hero. He has left his friends and family too soon,” Baldacci said in a statement. “We are all thankful for his dedication, and mourn his sacrifice. His actions and commitment will be remembered.”
U.S. Sen. Susan Collins and U.S. Rep. Michael Michaud, 2nd District, also released statements late Saturday mourning Ross’ death.
“I am deeply saddened to learn of the death of Staff Sergeant Eric Ross,” Collins said. “Sergeant Ross was bravely serving his country when he made the ultimate sacrifice. We are all proud and grateful for the service this young soldier gave to our nation. My deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends.”
“I am deeply saddened by the death of Staff Sergeant Eric Ross,” Michaud said. “He served his country with great distinction, and he gave the ultimate sacrifice. My heartfelt sympathies go out to his family and friends. They are in my prayers.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been made public. Baldacci said he will order flags to be flown at half-staff on the day of the funeral.
More than 3,000 U.S. troops have been killed in Iraq since the war began.
