FALMOUTH, Mass. (AP) – Divers searching the remains of a fishing boat that sunk last month in Nantucket Sound did not find the bodies of three missing crew members before they were turned back Tuesday by an approaching nor’easter.

A team of divers from the state police and a private salvage company reached the interior cabin of The Lady of Grace. The 75-foot commercial dragger was based out of New Bedford and went down 11 miles off Nantucket on Jan. 26 in an icy storm.

Senior Chief Richard Uronis of the Coast Guard, which is investigating the fatal shipwreck, said it was not known if the bodies of three remaining crew members are inside the boat or had washed out to sea.

“We’d like to confirm whether they are or are not (in the vessel),” he said. “Obviously, the Coast Guard and the other agencies included would like to provide some closure to the families.”

A dive team found the body of the vessel’s captain, Antonio Barroqueiro, 50, of Fairhaven, Mass., on Jan. 29. Still missing and presumed dead are fishermen Rogerio Ventura, Mario Farinhas and Joao Silva.

The dive team halted its search Tuesday after waves swelled to six feet and the wind gusted to 25 mph ahead of an approaching winter storm, Uronis said.
