When it comes to “doodling” there are no rules. You just put pen to paper and let the lines flow out. Doodling can get rid of boredom, be a goofy creation, or express an emotion.
So you’re not a doodle expert, eh? Let me give you some examples to get you started. First, you’ll need the drawing tool of your choice, and a piece of paper. Any paper you like will do.
Use simple shapes all over the page. Whatever pops into your head, draw it out real quick. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It will actually look more “doodley” if it’s NOT perfect.
See if you can make something out of squiggly lines of weird shapes. It will look pretty sweet when you put all the shapes together to make something new. I drew a horse out of thick-to-thin, curved lines that make up separate parts. All the parts work together and you see a horse.
Why not try making up a new animal? Take parts of different creatures and mush them into one. Feathers, horns, talons, bunny ears, fish eyes… See what you come up with! It might look like something from Star-Wars or Harry Potter.
And lastly, try drawing the mood you’re in. Are you sad? Take some time to think about what you’re sad about, and what things remind you of sadness, I usually think of rain, the colors grey and blue, and solitude. What about happiness? In the picture here I was feeling a little lost. See how this picture makes you feel like I was feeling when I drew it.
Remember, No doodle is alike. They can be beautiful or just a way to pass the time. Doodling is hard to describe; to me doodling is an artistic expression of the moment. Kind of like a page in the history book of you.
I’d like to see your doodles. E-mail me at [email protected]
