MONMOUTH – Fire destroyed an unoccupied home Wednesday morning near the Wales town line. There were no reported injuries.
At least a dozen trucks and firefighters from Monmouth, Greene, Wales, Sabattus, Winthrop and Leeds responded to the blaze. The house was for sale and undergoing major renovations, according to a neighbor, Richard Urquhart.
Urquhart, who lives directly across the street, said the house was purchased about six months ago and vacated about a month ago. Since then, the house had been undergoing renovations, including new siding and a new roof. A Century 21 “for sale” sign was posted in the front yard Wednesday morning.
Urquhart said his wife was leaving for work around 7:30 a.m. when she smelled smoke but saw nothing unusual.
The fire occurred at the intersection of Route 126 and South Monmouth Road. The South Monmouth Market is across the street from the house.
Police closed Route 126 and diverted traffic onto South Monmouth Road. The road was reopened by noon.
