JAY – Fire ripped through a garage at 29 Masterman Road on Friday afternoon after the owner went out to start his car and the vehicle caught fire, Jay Fire Rescue Chief Scott Shink said.

Lawrence Williams went in the house to call the fire department and when he came out the garage was on fire, Shink said.

When firefighters arrived on the scene, the garage was engulfed in flames, he said.

More than 30 firefighters from Jay, Livermore Falls, Wilton and Farmington responded to the site off Route 156.

The wind was blowing strong toward the nearby house, and flames scorched the entryway melting vinyl siding. Firefighters worked to keep the fire contained to the garage.

A haze of smoke drifted up and across Route 133.

“We were kind of hampered by wind because it was blowing forcefully in the direction of the house,” Shink said.

Besides the garage, Williams’ 1997 Buick LeSabre was destroyed along with everything in the garage including a small boat, Shink said.

No one was injured.

Williams was insured.
