East Auburn – From the accounts at hand it would seem that nearly every person in this vicinity is ill at the present time or is just recovering. Measles, whooping cough and the grip seem to have taken the greatest hold on the people.

• Snowshoeing for this winter was never better than it has been for the past few days, and in spite of the extreme cold, there were a large number of parties who enjoyed a walk out into the country. A popular route with quite a number has been up to Lake Auburn, the walk being ended with a shore dinner.

50 years ago, 1957

Orren T. Freeman, senior high school, Wichita Falls, Texas: “We do not tolerate Elvis Presley records at our dances, or blue jeans or ducktail haircuts. A boy from another state entered school recently with one of those haircuts. I had to pay for another haircut for him myself – but he didn’t get into school until then.” Eugene H. Van Vilet, Tenafly, N.J., junior-senior high school – “We have a board of education ruling against boots, jeans and ducktails.” These remarks came up during discussion of whether moral training has weakened in American homes and, if so, whether it’s up to the schools to take up the slack.

25 years ago, 1982

• The leaders of Maine’s largest commercial banks are supporting a Brennan administration plan that would allow out-of-state financial institutions to do business in Maine.

• Complaining that they are being treated like criminals, antique dealers and other sellers of used goods turned out by the hundreds to protest anti-crime legislation that would subject them to the strictest state regulation in New England. The bill, unanimously endorsed by the Maine Chiefs of Police Association, requires dealers to register with the state, to record each transaction and to wait at least five days before reselling used goods.
