PORTLAND (AP) – The Portland Fish Exchange released a study Monday that it hopes will bolster its case that Maine should allow trawlers to sell lobsters they inadvertently catch in their nets.
Maine’s ban on net-caught lobsters is forcing fishermen to bring their catches to Massachusetts, where it’s legal for them to sell lobsters, according to the report. The ban, the report says, has resulted in lost jobs, lost revenues and lost taxes for Maine.
The report was commissioned by the Portland Fish Exchange, a fish auction on Portland’s waterfront, and written by Planning Decisions Inc. of South Portland. The exchange is supporting a bill that would allow trawler fishermen to sell their incidental lobster catch in Maine.
A legislative hearing on the bill is scheduled for Monday.
Lobstermen say Maine’s $300 lobster fishery would be put at risk if lawmakers pass the bill.
Industry leaders contend the proposal would open the door to more trawlers targeting lobster.
