I walk daily in the L-A area. Recently, I was passed by a pickup truck that did not allow enough room on a lightly traveled street. The right mirror of the truck hit my left shoulder, and sent me flying into the snow. By the time I got up and found my now scratched glasses, the driver had sped away. I have a bruised left shoulder, a cracked baby finger, a side view mirror from a truck, and a bit more jaded view of my fellow man.
I urge all motorists to be especially aware of pedestrians who are forced by the condition of the sidewalks to walk in the street. Even weeks after a big snowstorm, there will be numerous sidewalks that have not been cleared or which have accumulated so much ice that walking on them is very dangerous. Walking in the street is the only option some of us have.
For those who also walk the streets of L-A I would encourage you to take some steps to make your walk as safe as possible. Wear clothes that are light in color. Buy reflective tape and put it on your back and front. I have a blinking light that (until last Thursday) seemed to work well.
Let’s look out for one another and we can all arrive home safe and sound.
