Under the new pension law approved Feb. 6, 1907, veterans of the Mexican war who have served 60 days and have received an honorable discharge therefrom are entitled to draw pension at the rate of $12 per month, provided he has reached the age of 62; $15 if he has reached the age of 70; and $20 per month if he has reached the age of 75 or over. The same conditions apply to veterans of the Civil War, with the exception that they are required to have served 90 days in the service.

• A total of 123 cases of measles were reported in Lewiston and Auburn during the week ending Feb. 23, according to the weekly communicable disease report issued by the Maine Bureau of Health.

• The last day before the deadline for excise tax payments was “relatively quiet,” Lewiston Treasurer-Collector Adrien O. Anctil said. Anctil’s office took in some $3,825.24 during the day, bringing the year’s total so far to $195,532.24. Records show that 9,055 persons have paid their taxes.

• Take braided rugs, for example. A few years ago, they were fit only for the second back bedroom, but now they’re making their way into the main part of the house along with other former unfashionables such as cotton-rag rugs and hand-hooked rugs.

• The 58th annual International Snowshoe Congress ended three days of festivities in Lewiston with local enthusiasts down-playing the unexpectedly low attendance figures and speculating on a possible resurgence in the sport. An estimated 1,100 to 1,500 snowshoers from New England and Canada arrived in Lewiston to participate in the daylong racing events, as well as in the just-as-important celebrating and socializing.
