National 4-H Club Week has particular significance for thousands of residents of western and central Maine since they are either taking an active part in the program or as youngsters learned skills which have stood them in good stead of earning their livelihoods. The four Hs stand for Head, Heart, Hands and Health; if a fifth were added it would be, How. Along with fun and comradeship, youth receive groundwork in a wide variety of projects and are taught principles of citizenship, sportsmanship and responsibility.

• Marcal Paper Mills Inc. is reopening its Mechanic Falls plant by the middle of this month to resume making special grades of paper for industry. The Marcal mill closed last September to the consternation of Mechanic Falls residents, for the plant was an integral part of the town’s economic prosperity.

• With tropical shirts cast to the bone-chilling wind, the Polar Bears of Wayne ran out of a coin-operated laundry and plunged into the Wayne Mill Pond, to the delight of about 75 saner spectators who were bundled up against temperatures in the mid-teens and a chill factor below zero.
