LOVELL – Recreation Director Michael Mendonca told voters at the annual town meeting Saturday that the other four towns participating in Lovell’s rec program have been asked to contribute more money.
Stoneham, Sweden, Stowe and Chatham have all been asked to step up their allotments for the program, he said.
Of the 518 youths in the program, 337 are from Lovell.
Mendonca is asking Lovell voters for $15,000 to support the rec program.
He said the remainder of the approximately $45,000 spent last year came from fundraising and fees.
The $15,000 asked for was approved and the gathering of voters responded with applause for the good job the Recreation Committee is doing.
In other business, Toni Seger wanted to know what the town is doing to be more energy efficient.
Outgoing selectmen’s Chairman Richard Eastman explained that officials planned to replace regular light bulbs with more energy efficient ones.
Seger and others had issues with giving Maine Public Broadcasting money this year. Complaints ranged from Lovell being a dead area for Channel 10 and the company not supporting local programs. The article requesting $360 narrowly passed.
An article asking for $140,000 for a plow truck was approved after it was explained that the town was only raising $45,000 and the rest was to be financed.
There was little or no discussion on requests for winter roads, repairing roads and bridges and upgrading roads, which were the largest budgeted items.
A new fund of $25,000 was approved for the Cushman Pond Dam Account, which will also address containment of milfoil and repairs to the dam.
The town voted to raise no money for civil emergency preparedness.
A cemetery ordinance was approved to set fees for plots and establish regulations.
Elected to office were: Edward Ryan to the Planning Board for five years, William McCormick as associate to the Planning Board for one year, John Donnelly for associate to the Planning Board for one year, Jon Bliss and Joseph Moody to the Budget Committee for seven years each, and Joel Hardman as SAD 72 director for one year.
