BANGOR (AP) – It’s unlikely that there’ll be any action taken in an assault on Dexter’s Tiger mascot during the high school basketball tournament, officials said.

Dexter High’s Quinn Dillon, a senior who wears the costume, suffered a bloody nose when he was accosted by three people on Feb. 24 after Dexter beat Calais 45-38 in the Eastern Maine Class C girls championship game at the Bangor Auditorium.

After the game, Dillon was walking up the stands when someone grabbed his tail. When he turned around, someone punched him in the face. He was still wearing his mask.

Dillon said he was concerned because he suffered a concussion as a sophomore on the junior varsity basketball team. He also passed out during a school concert last year.

“I’ve had some problems with my head, so I tried to protect that as best as I could,” he said of his actions during the attack. “I try to be careful.”

Charges would have been brought if Dillon could have identified his attacker, said tournament official Garry Spencer.

Dillon said he realizes he has detractors because of some of his antics, including yawning when the opponent’s names are read during the pregame announcements.

“I push it to the limit, I know,” he said.

Extra security was provided for Dillon for Saturday’s game and there were no problems. Dexter lost, 55-52, to Mount Abram of Strong for the Class C title.
