I read John Berry’s letter (Feb. 27) about his encounter with a truck’s side mirror and his resulting injuries. To me, that means he might have been walking with his back to traffic.

The first thing I was taught when I started school 72 years ago, was if you have to walk in the roadway, you walk facing traffic so that you can see what’s coming toward you and, hopefully, get out of the way – even climb a snowbank if you have to.

Living in a small town, the sidewalks were never plowed, so I had to walk in the streets in the winter. It was a lesson that I still follow today when walking.

Editor’s note: John Berry was walking on a one-way street in Lewiston when he was struck.
