PORTLAND (AP) – A man accused of fatally stabbing his father over the weekend at their home in Standish made his initial appearance Tuesday in Cumberland County Superior Court.

Kristian McKay, 21, entered no plea to a murder charge in the death of Donald McKay, 60, and was returned to the Cumberland County Jail, where he was being held without bail and under a suicide watch.

The younger McKay was arrested Saturday after the victim’s wife called police to report the attack.

Few details have emerged, and Justice Robert Crowley granted a defense request that the police affidavit in support of the charge against McKay be sealed from the public.

Prosecutor Lisa Marchese asked that the judge order a mental evaluation of McKay, a motion opposed by defense lawyer Robert LeBrasseur. Crowley scheduled a hearing on the issue Thursday.
