LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) – Eric Hinske’s grand slam powered a five-run first inning as the Boston Red Sox held on to beat the Detroit Tigers 7-6 on Saturday.

Detroit starter Justin Verlander struggled with his command, giving up two hits and two walks before serving up Hinske’s grand slam. Verlander finished with six runs allowed over two innings.

Magglio Ordonez singled in a pair of runs in the first before Josh Beckett’s curveball hit him in the head and knocked him out of the game. Gary Sheffield and Placido Polanco each scored twice.

After Edward Campusano tossed two scoreless innings for the Tigers, Todd Jones entered and was soon ejected for throwing twice inside on J.D. Drew.

Beckett didn’t give up an extra-base hit in his three innings, but two errors and two hit batters helped make for a long day for him with five runs allowed over three innings.

Hideki Okajima followed with 2 1/3 innings of one-run ball.

The Tigers have their first split-squad games of the spring Sunday against Philadelphia and the New York Mets.
