Many things in school go unnoticed, such as discrimination. I believe the hate discrimination causes makes schools unsafe. Often it is right in front of people, and they don’t even realize what is going on.
According to the journal Current Events, in the U.S. last year there were two cases where kids were denied the high school of their choice because of their skin color. The students’ parents took these cases to the Supreme Court.
Not all cases are the same. For example, in Utah, a senator tried to ban something that was meant to help kids in schools deal with homosexuality, claiming it to be an abomination. The senator wanted the program, called the gay/straight alliance, to stop meeting on school property.
I could list many more cases in this letter, but the truth be known, this won’t stop the discrimination that’s happening in our schools. People need to research this problem and be willing to act. That way we can help one step at a time. We can do this by taking notice and confronting discrimination more when we see it happening.
There are many groups to help with discrimination in schools. Some examples of these groups are The Unity Project, Civil Rights Teams, and so many others. Now that the community is aware of some of these groups, the community must know they cannot fight discrimination by themselves.
All of us together can help stop discrimination.
