LEWISTON – There was laughter and applause aplenty March 7 at St. Dominic Regional High School when the drama society presented its version of the popular TV program “Beauty & the Geek.”
The winners: Sophomores Michael Girouard and Christine Royles.
Hosted by students Adam Blais and Abby Gilbert, the evening consisted of three competitions. During the first round, the school’s self-professed beauties had to answer questions on various subjects prepared by teachers – four easy, three medium and two difficult. Each beauty was called to the microphone individually and quizzed before the live audience.
Round two was the big reveal. Since the pairing of teams, the beauties worked with their geeks, focusing on fashion and style. They spent hours pouring over magazines, window shopping at outlet stores, surfing the Net and consulting with their stylist, Tammy Ouellette, mother of St. Dom’s student Ben and alum Justin. The beauties then set their geeks free to use all of new fashion sense to create a look for themselves. The beauties were not allowed to see their geeks until the reveal.
Blais chatted on stage with the beauties, most of whom said they hoped their geek would come away from the experience with increased self-confidence. As part of the reveal, the lights were dimmed, a “before” photo was displayed and each geek strutted across the stage and presented a rose to his/her beauty, stopping to pose along the way.
After the strut, he/she stopped to speak with Gilbert about the”Beauty & the Geek” experience.
During intermission, audience members voted for their favorite couple, narrowing the competition to three.
For the final round, beauties and geeks were asked questions about their teammates and quizzed on information they acquired through the process, with a correct answer worth one point.
Two couples – seniors Eddy Connors and Katie Wolfe and Girouard and Royles – advanced to “The Newly Friend” questions, when they were asked, “What would your geek or beauty do? in certain circumstances.
The teams ended up in a tie, with victory coming down to one final question.
Back stage crew members presented winners Girouard and Royles with bouquets of flowers, balloons and an oversized check in the amount of $250, to be split between the two.
