RUMFORD – Two fire engines manned by three firefighters went whipping down Congress Street on Monday afternoon in response to an alarm sounding at the Rumford Community Home.

When firefighters got to the Kennedy Drive nursing home and rehabilitation center around 2:35 p.m., they found popcorn had been left in a microwave oven too long and smoked up the kitchen. Employees had already cleared most of the smoke out.

Lt. Chris Bryant said the

Rumford Community Home’s smoke detector was set off, which in turn sets off the alarm. That alarm is automatically hooked into the fire station.

Firefighters and trucks left the scene after a few minutes.
