RUMFORD – River Valley Crossing Shopping Center owner Jay Wise is talking with several potential retailers about the possibility of locating at the Route 2 site, he said Monday.

Wise, of WRE Commercial Brokers, said he has been talking with a couple of food-related businesses about moving into the shopping center. He said he expects something solid may come from the discussions once Marden’s opens in late April or early May.

“Perhaps that will spark something,” he said.

Marden’s, a popular Maine-based discount retailer, signed a multiyear lease with WRE in February for use of 43,750 square feet once used by Ames Department Store. Employees are in the process of being interviewed. About 50 will be hired by the time the company’s 14th store opens.

Rumors have been gaining momentum throughout the region during the past few months that an Olympia Sports retail store had signed a lease for use of a portion of the shopping center. Wise said that was not true.

Marden’s will join The Dollar Tree at the shopping center.
