WINTHROP – Walter Noble of Wilton is being accused, again, of driving without a license and operating under the influence.

Noble has been convicted of 48 driving-related violations since 1966 and has several more cases pending.

Winthrop police officer Peter Struck stopped a car driven by Noble, 64, on Main Street Thursday afternoon after an off-duty police officer had observed him driving and contacted police, Winthrop police Sgt. Dan Cook said.

Struck arrested Noble on charges of operating under the influence of alcohol, operating with habitual offender status and violating bail conditions, Cook said.

He was transported to Kennebec County Jail in Augusta.

His bail was set at $1,500 on the driving charges but he won’t be able to bail out of jail until he goes before a judge since he is charged with violating previous bail conditions, Cook said.

Noble was indicted Tuesday by a Franklin County grand jury on two charges of operating after license revocation and one count each of failure to give correct name and violation of condition of release.

Noble was arrested twice late last year by Jay police and charged with operating after suspension.

Noble hasn’t been eligible to drive in Maine since 1968.

He was scheduled to be arraigned on the Franklin County indictment in April.
