BRIDGTON – Opponents of the war in Iraq are invited to show their dissent this weekend in Bridgton.

Dick and Betsy Enright are organizing a peace vigil, which will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the traffic light at the intersection of routes 302 and 117.

“Please feel free to bring any signs you may have that express your individual opinion on this matter,” the Enrights said in a statement.

The protest is one of many such events planned for Saturday. The organization From Every Village Green is helping to coordinate antiwar events across the state. According to FEVG’s Web site, vigils will also be held in Harrison, Hebron, Oxford, Paris, Waterford and West Paris.

March 17 marks the day in 2003 that President Bush delivered an ultimatum to Saddam Hussein and his sons, demanding that they leave Iraq or risk war with the United States. The war began two days later with a strike on Hussein.

The Enrights’ statement also says the purpose of the event is to stress peace and diplomacy as viable options for resolution of the conflict. It also expresses support for soldiers serving in Iraq, and hopes for their safe return.
