Poland’s town meeting is approaching next month. At the past few meetings, it was mentioned that the attendance was down and that many people lack the interest or motivation to attend.

Poland selectmen meetings often have taxpayers present who are interested and motivated, but are not allowed to speak their minds by the chairman. She is willing to let a “selected few” speak for long periods of time, since their opinions are usually the same as hers. However, Glenn Peterson and George Sanborn, who are knowledgeable about town issues and have been more vocal in the newspaper, are often denied equal time and freedom of speech at those meetings.

Perhaps it’s time to replace the entire board of selectmen, with the exception of Wendy Sanborn. She appears to be the only member who is willing to support the wishes and rights of the taxpayers of Poland. For 25-plus years, we have had the poorest, most self-serving board that any town could not hope for.

Residents should look at the mess Poland is in financially. If the leaders of the town didn’t know what was happening, they weren’t doing their jobs. What other explanation could there be for their not knowing or at least trying to find out?

Wendy Sanborn pursued the issues she felt were relevant. She can be proud of her track record.
