WINTHROP – Meghan McCarthy of Winthrop has received the Maine Principal’s Association Principal’s Award at Winthrop High School, Principal Kevin Harrington has announced.

The daughter of Kevin and Susan McCarthy, during her four years at the school, McCarthy has distinguished herself as an outstanding student and athlete, said Harrington. Her activities include class council president sophomore through senior year, Student Council secretary sophomore year and vice president junior and senior years, Latin Club historian sophomore year and president junior and senior years. She has also been a member of the AFS Club, Yearbook Club and a member of the 2007 High School Accreditation Committee.

McCarthy has had an active athletic career at Winthrop High School, playing softball freshman and sophomore years and track and field junior and senior years. She started all four years as a varsity player and was chosen as captain her junior and senior years. She was the KJ Field Hockey Player of the Year for 2006; a Mountain Valley Conference First Team All-Star 2005 and 2006, and was a member of the Maine Field Hockey All-Star Team and Maine Field Hockey Association All-Academic Team.

McCarthy has contributed more than 130 hours of community service, and she has participated in several church activities, including a high school youth group. She hopes to attend McGill University in Montreal, where she plans to major in business management.

On Saturday, April 7, McCarthy and Harrington will attend an honors luncheon in Bangor. At the conclusion of the luncheon, drawings will be held for five $1,000 scholarships.
