NEW SHARON – An elementary school girl is doing fine after an icicle she was pulling on came loose from a roof and struck her in the head, Cape Cod Hill School Principal Cheryl Pike said Thursday.

The girl received four stitches to close her wound.

She was out at recess Wednesday and drawn to some icicles that had formed in a back corner of the school building.

“She was pulling an icicle off the roof and it broke off and hit her,” Pike said.

An ambulance was called and the girl’s parents met her at Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington.

Pike said the child was given four stitches at the hospital to close the cut.

She spoke to the child’s father Thursday and he said she’s fine, Pike said.

School personnel are taking precautions to prevent a repeat of the incident and checking the area daily to remove icicles and other ice, she said.
