RUMFORD – Selectmen shaved just over $136,000 from the proposed municipal budget last week. Now it’s the Finance Committee’s turn.
At Tuesday’s selectmen’s budget session, the board adopted a municipal budget of $7,354,564, an increase of 4.9 percent from current year spending of just over $7 million.
Under the state’s L.D. 1 tax cap, Rumford’s amount of growth since last year allows it to raise the municipal budget by just over $132,000 from the current year’s. With Tuesday’s cuts, officials must still reduce the proposed budget by another $200,000, unless voters agree to raise the tax cap.
With this year’s change to referendum ballot for the adoption of the municipal budget, acting Town Manager Stacy Carter said residents will be able to vote for the selectmen’s recommendation, the Finance Committee’s recommendation, or neither. Residents will also be able to approve, or disapprove of allowing a raise in the tax cap.
If a particular article is voted down, then another referendum vote would be held at a later date.
From original department requests, selectmen cut $90,814 from the Parks Department which would have allowed the purchase of a new truck, attachment for the mower, and lighting of the Hosmer Field tennis courts.
Also removed from the original department requests were: $22,000 that would have increased the half-time code enforcement officer position to full-time; $5,000 from the state retirement account; $2,000 from the municipal building maintenance account; and several thousand dollars from the town manager and town clerk’s offices.
The Finance Committee will review the proposed municipal budget at 6 p.m. on April 9 and April 12 at the municipal building.
Residents will vote on June 12.
